What is a Turbocharger?

A Turbocharger is a Turbine driven device which is used to increase the volumetric efficiency of an internal combustion engine.

It takes power from exhaust gases coming from an engine and use that power to suck fresh air from the atmosphere and supply it to the engine for combustion.

Why we require a Turbocharger ?

In general the engines which directly suck air from atmosphere are not able to suck sufficient air from the atmosphere for the combustion.

This could be due to high speed of engine or due to design of engine.

Hence we have to put an external device into work to supply air to the engine for complete combustion and that device is called turbocharger.

A turbocharger acquires energy from the exhaust gases for its working.

Working and construction of Turbocharger

Turbocharger is a compact assembly of both turbine and air compressor mounted on a single shaft. In Which turbine takes pressure energy from the exhaust gases (red colour) and give that to the shaft. The compressor takes that energy from the shaft and use it to compress fresh atmospheric air (blue colour) and give that to engine for burning.

Conclusion

A turbocharger is a very useful device used to increase volumetric efficiency and fuel burning efficiency of an engine.

It utilizes energy of exhaust gases coming out from the engine (which is a win win situation) and uses it in supplying compressed air to the engine.
